How pregnancy tests work

Pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) โ€” a hormone made by the developing placenta. hCG starts being produced once the embryo implants in the uterine lining, which happens 6-12 days after ovulation (most often days 8-10). Once implantation occurs, hCG roughly doubles every 48-72 hours in early pregnancy.

Because the test detects a hormone that doesn't exist before implantation, testing too early gives you a negative regardless of whether you're actually pregnant. The most common reason for a false negative isn't a faulty test โ€” it's testing before hCG has reached the test's detection threshold.

Home urine tests typically detect 20-25 mIU/mL (standard) or 6-10 mIU/mL (high-sensitivity). Quantitative blood testsdetect below 5 mIU/mL and report the exact number. If you need an answer fast โ€” for example, before starting medication that's contraindicated in pregnancy โ€” a quantitative beta hCG draw is the fastest reliable answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most standard home tests reliably detect pregnancy 14 days after ovulation โ€” the day of your expected period. High-sensitivity tests (First Response Early Result, FRER, and similar) can detect pregnancy as early as 9 days post-ovulation in some women, but false negatives are common at that point. Waiting until the day of your missed period dramatically reduces false negatives.
Urine home tests detect hCG once it crosses a sensitivity threshold (usually 20-25 mIU/mL for standard tests, 6-10 for sensitive ones). Quantitative blood tests measure the exact hCG level and can detect pregnancy as early as 7-10 days post-ovulation. Blood tests are more sensitive and provide a number, but require a lab draw.
